Muhudu Maha Viharaya - Important archaeological site in Sri Lankan History.

Muhudu maha viharaya is a Buddhist temple situated at Pottuvil in Eastern province of Sri Lanka. This temple is situated near a wide beach (Arugam Bay). In this temple there have a stone made statue of Lord Buddha and two statues of old kings or gods.

This used to be a large complex, currently restricted to a small area due to land acquisition by the villages. Same time some of the historical artifacts were buried under the sand dunes.

In today also there is a Buddhist temple. This temple is built in Anuradapura era by king Kaavantissa. According to some folk stories Viharamaha Devi has come ashore from this place not from Kirinda and there are lots of archeological proofs supporting that. However this Buddhist temple has been built over 2000 years ago and currently ruins and remaining’s of Stupas and statues are being destroyed.
