Elephants are the largest mammals. A Fully grown Sri Lankan elephant is 10.5 ft in height and 4tons in weight. Their lifespan is up to 72 years. Wasgamuwa National Park is one of the best places to spot Sri Lankan elephants. According to the census done in 2011 there are 5879 wild elephants in Sri Lanka while 360 out of them, are in Wasgamuwa National Park. Only 1% of total population is tuskers.
Adult elephants eat 100-150 kg of grass, leaves, bamboo, roots per day and drink 100 liters of water (Subject to be changed on weather conditions).
Elephants can communicate long distances such as 4km when their surroundings are normal and a vision of 35 – 40 meters. Adult elephant walks 45km per day. (Subject to be changed on weather conditions). Female elephants give birth to baby elephants, once in five years. Female Elephants pregnancy period is 22 months. A family of elephants consists of 20 members.
