Sri Lanka’s Deanston is the
location of a Forest Department Conservation Centre. It is also called Knuckles
Information Centre. Only few foreign tourists have visited Deanston until now,
some cross it on their way to Corbett’s Gap and Meemure, Sri Lanka’s best
trekking area. Deanston is worth a stop, for a hike to a place called Mini
World’s End. Hikers will not get lost here, there is only one path (crossing
one fence by a ladder), and signboard at the road and the Information centre
says: It is in 1.1 km distance. However, the round trip will be of 4 km length
altogether.
The name “Mini World’s End” is
misleading. “Big” and “Little World’s Ends” are quite famous viewpoints at
Horton Plains in the very south of the hill country. These two more famous
pocket guide “World’s Ends” are 120 km away from Deanston and the “World’s End”
at Deanston is not at all “mini”. It is simply great and breathtaking. The
cliff is not as high as at Horton Plains, but the view is much wider, a 270
degree panorama.
The road distance from Kandy is
about 60 KM; this means 160 km from Colombo. From Kandy you have to take the
A26 main road to Mahiyangana via Teldeniya. At the highest point of the
mountain road, at Hunnasgiriya, you have to take the side road leading to
Corbett’s Gap and Meemure. Only the first 10 kilometres are in a good
condition. So you have good luck, Deanston is in only 8 kilometers distance
from Hunnasgiriya. So it’s easy to visit it on the way from Kandy to
Mahiyangana town or Maduru Oya National park. 2 hours more is enough for this
highly recommendable visit.
