Bathalegala
(Bible Rock), situated in Sabaragamuwa Province, also known as Bible Rock is
one of the ideal places for a scenic hike in Sri Lanka and visible as you reach
Kadugannawa. It is shrouded in thick jungle from time immemorial. Today it is
being transformed into a Buddhist place of worship. To the traveler proceeding
from Metropolitan Colombo to Kandy, the magnificent spectacle of the rock
stands as a colossus dwarfing the surrounding landscape. The Colonialist’s
called it “The Bible Rock”, as it resembles an open book.
Bible
rock rises up to 2634 feet (798 Meters) and no other sceneries can beat the
panorama which is waiting for you at the flat top. On a bright sunny day, all
the surrounding mountains such as Dolosbage range, Uthuwan Kanda Hantana
range, Urakanda, Asupini ella waterfall, Mawanella town Kadugannawa pass will
display beautiful views in front of hiker’s eyes. Bible rock is a place where
can you live in the company of Nature. This is an ideal place to spot the
world fasters bird “Shaheen Falcon” because of the sheer drop of the rock. Apart
from “Shaheen Falcon” you can spot Black Eagle, Crested Serpent Eagle,
Minivet species, Endemic species like Ceylon Gray Horn Bill, Black rumped
flame back.
Bible
Rock can be seen when passing the Kadugannawa Pass. From there it may seem a
difficult hike because the shape of it and the thick jungle surrounding the
mountain. But it is an enjoyable, moderate hike which each step will be
refreshed by the soft and cool breeze. The hike take you around one hour to
the top derive the real pleasure out of life. And one journey to this place
will refresh you proving that the wonders of nature can do more for health
than all the drugs in the world.
